Makeup artist in Borjomi

Borjomi is roughly 160 km and two and a half hours from Tbilisi. The town lies in the narrow Mtkvari gorge at around 800 metres, and the gorge is what sets the conditions: it is noticeably damper and cooler here than on the plains around it.

A gorge holds moisture the plains do not

The narrow river gorge traps humidity, and steep slopes rise directly above the town. The result is air noticeably damper than places fifty kilometres away.

So the base is built to hold under humidity and setting is mandatory. That is the exact opposite of what Bakuriani needs forty kilometres up the road — and both happen in one day when a wedding covers the two.

Park shade and dappled light

Borjomi's mineral water park is shaded by tall trees and much of the photography happens there. Light filters through leaves and falls on the face in patches.

The base therefore goes on evenly and highlighter is measured: in dappled light, pronounced shine reads as oily skin. The same logic as the Tsinandali garden, and the opposite of open sun.

Likani and historic interiors

The Likani palace and the old bathhouses are frequent Borjomi wedding settings. Their interiors are dark and lit warm.

In warm, low light makeup looks softer to the eye than it does in a photograph. So intensity is built for what the camera will see, not for what the room's mirror suggests.

Two and a half hours, open all year

160 km takes two and a half hours and the road is open year-round — unlike Bakuriani, Borjomi requires no mountain pass.

Driving up the same morning is therefore the normal choice. Arriving the night before is only needed if you must be ready before seven.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive to Borjomi?
Two and a half hours, roughly 160 km. The road is open all year and crosses no mountain pass.
Is Borjomi humid?
Yes. The narrow Mtkvari gorge traps moisture and it is damper here than on the surrounding plains. The base is built for exactly that.
Our wedding is split between Borjomi and Bakuriani. Is that a problem?
No, but we need to know in advance. Forty kilometres apart the conditions invert — damp in Borjomi, dry in Bakuriani — and the makeup has to survive both.
What does the park change?
Its tall trees filter the light into patches on the face, so the base goes on more evenly and highlighter is kept restrained.
