An engagement is the event photographed from the shortest distance — the ring shot, the portrait beside your parents, the close frame across a table. That changes the brief: this makeup has to survive being examined from centimetres away, not from the middle of a hall.

A close frame is unforgiving

A wide shot forgives a great deal. A close one shows every border: where the foundation stops, where powder sits thickly, where a line has drifted.

So most of the time in engagement makeup goes on the base rather than on colour. Colour is added last and always takes up less space than it would in an evening look.

Two kinds of light in one evening

An engagement almost always starts in daylight — family arriving, photographs at home or in a garden — and continues into the evening under artificial light.

It is one of the rare events where the makeup has to work in both. The answer is to build the foundation for daylight and strengthen only the accent for the evening, rather than the other way around.

Family in the frame

In engagement photographs you are almost always beside relatives who are wearing no makeup or very little. If your tone is two shades lighter than theirs, the photograph shows it instantly.

So the tone is matched to your neck and décolletage rather than to your face alone. It is the only reliable way to keep a face from reading as a separate mask in a group shot.

An engagement is not a rehearsal for the wedding look

People often ask whether the same makeup should be used for both. In practice, no.
