Birthday makeup

A birthday is the most photographed evening of most people's year, and it happens almost entirely under artificial light. Those two facts decide everything about the makeup: it is built for a camera in a dim restaurant, not for daylight, and it has to still be intact when the cake arrives four hours in.

Restaurant light is the design constraint

Most birthday venues in Tbilisi are lit warm and low — somewhere around 2700K, often with the light coming from above or from behind the table. That light drains colour out of a face. Makeup built to look correct in daylight reads as almost bare in that room.

So a birthday face is deliberately stronger than a daytime one: more definition around the eye, a clearer lip, blush placed slightly higher and with more colour than would look right at noon.

The exception is anything reflective. Low warm light plus a phone flash is the worst combination for shimmer, and every guest at the table has a phone.

Phone cameras are the real photographer

Almost every photo from a birthday is taken on a phone, close up, with flash, from below. That is an unforgiving combination and it is worth designing for.

Flash flattens the face, which is the argument for definition. Flash also multiplies anything reflective, which is the argument against heavy highlighter and against translucent powder containing silica — both photograph as a white cast.

A powder tinted to your own skin tone rather than a translucent one solves most of it. It is the single change that improves birthday photographs more than anything else on the table.

  • Tinted powder rather than translucent — no white cast under flash
  • Highlighter at roughly half the usual amount
  • Defined lash line — flash flattens everything else
  • A lip with actual colour, because warm low light drains it

Holding for the whole evening

A birthday runs four to six hours and involves eating, drinking and talking, which is harder on makeup than a wedding ceremony is. The lip goes first, always.

The answer is a long-wear lip product or a liner underneath a lipstick, and accepting that one reapplication after the meal is normal rather than a failure. Anything that promises to survive a three-course dinner untouched is promising something no product does.

The base is easier. A properly set base holds the evening without touch-ups; the T-zone may need blotting paper around hour three, and blotting paper works far better than adding powder.

Deciding how strong to go

The most common regret is not going far enough, because the decision gets made at home in bright bathroom light where the face already looks finished.

The useful question is not what looks right now — it is what will read from across a table, in low light, in a photograph taken by someone who is not a photographer. That is usually one step stronger than feels comfortable in the mirror.

The exception is anyone who does not usually wear much makeup. Going from almost nothing to a full evening look on a day full of photographs is how people end up not recognising themselves in the pictures. In that case we build up gradually and check in a phone camera partway through, which is the honest preview.

Booking and price

Makeup starts at 150 GEL. The artist travels to you — at home before the restaurant is the usual arrangement, and it is more comfortable than arriving somewhere already made up and worrying about the drive.

Allow an hour. That is a genuine hour of working time, so book the appointment to end at least thirty minutes before you need to leave, not at the moment you need to leave.

For a group — a birthday where several people want makeup — book well ahead and expect roughly an hour each. Three people is most of an afternoon, and it is the single most common scheduling mistake.

Frequently asked questions

How long before the party should the makeup be done?
Allow an hour of working time and finish at least thirty minutes before you leave. Booking the appointment to end exactly when you need to go is the usual mistake.
Will it last the whole evening?
The base holds four to six hours without touch-ups. The lip will not survive a meal — a long-wear formula or liner underneath, and one reapplication after dinner, is normal.
Why do I look pale in birthday photos?
Warm low restaurant light drains colour, and phone flash flattens the face. Birthday makeup is deliberately stronger than daytime makeup for exactly that reason.
Can several of us have makeup before a birthday?
Yes. Allow roughly an hour per person and book well ahead — three people is most of an afternoon, and that is usually underestimated.
