Wedding day timeline

Start at the ceremony hour. Subtract the travel to the venue. Subtract getting dressed. Subtract the photographer's time, if there are getting-ready shots. Only what is left is available for hair and makeup.

In practice the start time usually lands an hour or two earlier than instinct suggests — and that gap is exactly the difference between a calm morning and a rushed one.

The order is not arbitrary. It follows two rules, and they settle every case.

• First: anyone who also needs hair, since hair takes longer
• Then: bridesmaids and family
• The bride last, so her makeup is freshest at the ceremony
• If the mother is being done, shortly before the bride

There should be one free interval in the schedule, and it belongs before the bride's makeup — not at the end of the day.

The reason is simple: delays almost always happen mid-morning, when somebody is not there yet or hair took longer than expected. A buffer at the end is only reached after you are already late, at which point it saves nothing.

If there are two dresses or two locations, changing and travelling become their own items in the schedule. Both are routinely under-counted.

Changing affects hair and makeup, particularly if a dress goes on over the head. So if there are two dresses, the hairstyle has to be chosen in advance to survive the change.

After booking we need three numbers: the ceremony hour, the address, and how many people need makeup. From those we send back a schedule giving each person their own time.

That schedule goes to everyone named in it beforehand. It is the single step that does most to prevent a wedding morning running late.
