Brow shaping and makeup

The brow is the only feature whose alteration changes an entire expression. It works as a frame: a tail a millimetre higher opens the eye, and a head a millimetre heavier makes the expression severe. That is why brows are worth more attention than they usually get.

Three points that set the shape

Brow shape is not arbitrary. It is set by your own facial proportions, through three points.

The head sits vertically above the nostril. The high point sits on the line running from the nostril through the outer third of the eye. The tail sits on the line running from the nostril through the outer corner. Those three points are individual and owe nothing to fashion.

Colour a shade lighter than your hair

The most common error is a brow that is too dark. A brow darker than the hair makes a face look hard and reads instantly as drawn on.

For dark hair, brow colour goes one shade lighter. For light hair the reverse applies — one shade darker, or the brow disappears altogether. That is the only exception to the rule.

Filling rather than drawing

The correct technique follows the direction the hair grows — short strokes, upward and outward, rather than one continuous line.

In practice that means product goes where hair is missing and stays off where hair is already dense. An evenly filled brow always looks artificial, however carefully it was done.

Products, and when each one applies

Three products give three different results, and the right one depends on how much hair you have.

Pencil — imitates individual hairs, best for sparse brows
Powder — soft filling, better for brows that are already dense
Gel or wax — holds the shape without adding colour
Clear gel — setting only, when the brow is naturally full

Asymmetry is normal

No two brows match, and forcing them to almost always makes the result worse, because it fights the face's natural asymmetry.

The right goal is brows that are sisters rather than twins. In practice: heads at the same height, tails on the same line, and the middle of each left with its own natural shape.
