The five you actually need

These five cover nearly every task in a daily face, and adding to them has diminishing returns.

Base — flat or round, depending on the coverage you want
Concealer — small and tapered, for precise work
Powder — large and fluffy
Blush and bronzer — medium, slightly angled
Eyeshadow — one to place, one to blend

Natural or synthetic

The rule is simple and it depends on texture: synthetic bristles for cream products, natural for powder.

The reason is physical. Natural hair is porous and absorbs cream, so the product ends up in the brush rather than on your face. Synthetic bristles are smooth and keep cream on the surface.

Where money is worth spending

In two brushes: the blending brush and the base brush. In both cases a cheap one directly affects the result — a poor blending brush cannot produce a gradient at all.

It is not worth spending on a powder brush, provided it is large and soft. That is the category where the link between price and result is weakest.

How long a brush lasts

A good brush lasts years if it is washed and dried correctly. What destroys it is water running into the handle, where the glue dissolves and the bristles begin to shed.

So the brush should always point downwards while washing, and lie flat while drying. Those two details extend a brush's life several times over, and neither costs anything.
